Microlights, A wonderful way to fly. A great way to go fishing too.. |
I had waited all afternoon in anticipation of our microlight trip across to the west coast. Graham, my instructor, would be flying in his MX II and I would be going with Tony's Quicksilver MX I. It had been calm but sunny all day, and I'd already spent an hour or so practicing my landings during the thermals. By 4:30 the clouds drifted in so we gassed up and headed on an a mission to acquire dinner....
I followed Graham out, we flew over the broken hill sides of Niake and across the farmlands at about a fifteen hundred feet. Needless to say the views below me are wondrous and my feeling of exhilaration is always present during flight. All to soon the coast line is there so we descend down to 950 feet. From the cliffs it's a gentle glide to the long black sanded beach below. We both cruised along the beach a way's at about 10 feet, then brought ourselves to land at the far northern end by the rocks. It was mussels we've come for and mussels we certainly got! Huge man, I'd never seen them so plentiful and fat.
Ha..... Microlight pilots get bigger mussels cause dem wings reach secluded beaches a?....

Graham has been flying Quicksilvers since the early 1980's. He considers them to be time proven machine and still flies an MXII today (as you can see in the photo above) In calm conditions Quicksilvers are the most graceful and easy plane to handle. However fly them on windy or hot days and you can expect a lot more excitement than you'd planed on.

Flying with friends is a special thing |
To anyone with dreams of flying, this is a top way to do it. It's within the reach of most of us accustomed to a modern lifestyle, you needn't spend any more than one would expect of a decent motorcycle nor will it burn more gas than an average family car. I would recommend however that if you intend to buy a machine, get a two seater so the fun can be shared with your friends! You'll certainly be popular with your thrill seeker mates if you do.... :-)
